Women and Gender
Women are actors in their own right in the colonial and post-colonial history of Marseille, whether from the side of the colonial powers or the colonized. From the end of the 18th century to our day women have been involved in a variety of ways, as travelers, nuns, activists, immigrants, nurses, artists, dancers, etc. They are also omnipresent in the colonial imaginary, whether in the guise of Marianne, the incarnation of the French Republic, or in the allegories of their people and continents. This themed collection allows us to restore women’s presence within this history, but also to become aware of gender dynamics over time.
