Racism and Antiracism
Racism is consubstantial to the colonial situation without being reducible to it. Colonization relies on a hierarchical and unequal vision of humanity. Therefore, the manifestations of racism are various, visible, and multiform. For the vast majority of immigrants present in France and Marseille being from former colonies or racialized, racism does not stop with the independences, quite the contrary. Even the cosmopolitan myth of Marseille has a hard time covering up the ways that racism is brutality demonstrated in the city during periods of crisis. However, this themed collection allows us to see the various solidarity initiatives that are also present. Therefore, since the 1960s, the city has become both a hotspot for and a symbol of racism and antiracism in France.
