Marseille, melting pot of anti-colonialism movements
Following the First World War, discourses against colonization, supported by the Communist party, formed and were disseminated throughout the colonies and metropolitan France. In Marseille, they crystallized at the beginning of the 1920s against the colonial exhibition of 1922. Multiple collectives and associations were created, often by colonized people present in the metropolitan France. During the wars in Indochina and Algeria, the port and the city became a hotspot for protests against the wars and for the independence of those colonies. This themed collection highlights the role that Marseille played in the formation and expression of anti-colonial and pro-independence discourses. Capital of an empire, yes, but a fragile and contested empire.
